One person dies every minute from armed violence by The Control Arms campaign 6:10pm 29th Mar, 2012 Thousands of people are killed, injured, raped, and forced to flee from their homes as a result of the unregulated global arms trade. The Control Arms campaign is a global civil society alliance calling for a bulletproof Arms Trade Treaty: a global, legally binding agreement that will ease the suffering caused by irresponsible transfers of conventional weapons and munitions. On July 2, the world’s governments will meet at the UN Headquarters in New York to agree the terms of an Arms Trade Treaty. It’s time to act. It’s an appalling joke that bananas are more tightly regulated than guns. That’s why we are demanding that in July, governments agree to a legally-binding and watertight ATT that protects everyone. Since 2003, we"ve been campaigning for an ATT that would prevent millions of people worldwide being killed, injured, raped and repressed every year because of a poorly regulated arms trade that fuels human rights abuses, conflict and poverty. In the last 9 years, we’ve had support for an ATT from over a million people worldwide. Now, in the run-up to July, is a crucial time for the campaign. We need your help to make an impact on the UN negotiations, to ensure a strong, effective and loophole-free treaty that covers all conventional arms - including ammunition. We know that putting pressure on governments works and we know that such a treaty can be a reality. A straight-talking ATT would stop weapons falling into the hands of militias, mafias and mass-murderers. Unregulated arms cause serious human rights abuses, poverty and war crimes; small arms alone kill more people every year than the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. They paralyze health, education and other services. The world needs a solid ATT that prevents the transfer of small arms, weapons and munitions if they are likely to contribute to the loss of human rights, lives and livelihoods. One person dies every minute from armed violence. In that same minute, 15 new arms are manufactured. This has to stop. April 30, 2012 Parliamentarians Around the Globe Support a Strong Arms Trade Treaty More than 1,300 parliamentarians from 54 countries have signed the Control Arms Global Parliamentarian Declaration on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The Members of Parliament, Senators, and other legislators who have become signatories endorse the notion of a strong Arms Trade Treaty and have pledged their support in making the robust, legally binding instrument a global reality. Parliamentarians are the voices and representatives of the citizens who vote for them. Which means that their endorsement includes the support of hundreds of thousands of citizens worldwide. As well, this wide support from national level legislators also opens up possibilities for rapid ratification processes after ATT negotiations conclude in July. More and more parliamentarians are supporting the Declaration every day, proclaiming their support for a Treaty that protects lives and livelihoods around the world Visit the related web page |
