The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are appealling for help to bring desperately needed relief assistance to the victims of the earthquake that devastated the Iranian city of Bam on Friday.

At least 20,000 people were killed in the earthquake, an estimated 50,000 were injured and tens of thousands left homeless.

Following a request for international assistance from the Government of Iran and the Iranian Red Crescent, the Federation will send some 20,000 family tents, 30,000 plastic sheets, 200,000 blankets, 40,000 kitchen sets; 400,000 water purification tablets; 30 electricity generators and 20,000 kerosene heaters.

“This preliminary appeal is intended to provide immediate relief and basic assistance to a traumatized population,” said Abbas Gullit, head of the Federation’s Disaster Management and Coordination division. “As the operation progresses we can assess the medium- and longer-term needs and amend the appeal."

“While it is difficult to put an exact figure on the costs of rehabilitation and reconstruction, the scope of the destruction in Bam and the impact on the population indicate that these longer-term needs will be considerable,” he added.

A number of national Red Cross Societies have made available Emergency Response Units (ERU), teams specialised in logistics, water and sanitation and basic health care which may be deployed under Federation coordination. Other National Societies have offered to support the Federation appeal with funding, personnel or materials.
