9 November – United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today strongly denounced Saturday's deadly terrorist strike in Saudi Arabia.

“The Secretary-General is horrified by last night's attack against a residential compound in Riyad, Saudi Arabia, that reportedly killed at least 17 innocent people and injured more than 120 others, including women and children” a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement. “He condemns this terrorist act in the strongest possible terms.”

Through his spokesman, Mr. Annan voiced confidence that Saudi Arabia “will bring to justice the perpetrators of this cowardly attack” and conveyed his condolences to the country and to the families of the victims.

There is widespread condemnation of the attack on a housing compound in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, housing mainly people from the Arab world. Below is some of the reaction in quotes.

Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef:

There is no crime more heinous than this. It took place in the country and against citizens and a place housing Arabs and Muslims. Let everyone inside and outside Saudi Arabia know that this country will not be shaken because we derive our strength from God.

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa:

The secretary general condemns in the strongest terms the criminal and terrorist actions which have no purpose except threatening stability, planning evil and terrorising and killing civilians without heeding any religion or creed or caring about the sanctity of the month of Ramadan.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, speaking for the European Union:

This sad circumstance confirms the necessity to continue to fight together, and with the greatest determination, terrorism in all its forms.

UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw:

These murderers have shown absolute contempt for Islam and for people of all nations. This was indiscriminate murder of men, women and children of various nationalities during the holy month of Ramadan.

US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage:

I can't say that last night's attack was the only or the last attack. My view is these al-Qaeda terrorists - and I believe it was al-Qaeda - would prefer to have many such events.

Russian foreign ministry:

We view this as another crime of international terrorism. The criminals' methods leaves no doubt that the people behind this barbaric act have no morals or religion.

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer:

The German Government fiercely condemns this attack - a new barbaric act against civilians.

Lebanese President Emile Lahoud:

Lebanon, which condemns terrorism anywhere, can only deplore in the strongest terms attacks like these which targeted our sister country Saudi Arabia.

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi:

Killing innocent people, including women and children, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, is immoral, inhuman and against religious beliefs.

Kuwait Government statement:

Kuwait... reasserts its steady position in condemning and rejecting all forms of terrorism and urges the international community to condemn such ugly criminal acts and fight them with all means and resources.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi:

We resolutely denounce such an act of terrorism, which victimises innocent people, and we are determined to continue co-operating with the international community in eradicating terrorism.

Pakistan foreign ministry spokesman Masood Khan:

Terrorists have once again targeted the innocent civilians. These attacks show that no country in the world is safe from the dark designs of terrorists.
