November 5, 2003.

The United Nations General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to demand an end to the more than 40-year-old American economic embargo on Cuba for the 12th year in a row.

In what has become an annual roasting by US allies and enemies alike, the assembly voted 179 to three with two abstentions. Only Israel and the Marshall Islands voted with the US.

Cuba has been under a US trade and travel embargo since 1961.The US administration is also under pressure from farm states, senators and members to ease restrictions. Both the House and Senate have voted to block enforcement of US travel restrictions to Cuba next year.

Today's vote by the general assembly is not binding
